It has half the thickness of the other FTDI Basic we have, and it has a purple LilyPad board.
It’s considered the basic breakout board for the FTDI FT232RL USB to serial IC. It works well with the official Arduino and cloned 5V Arduino boards since it has a matching pinout of the board.
What can it be used for? General serial applications, definitely!
Also, what’s special about it is that the DTR is opposed with the RTS pin of the FTDI cable, which results in allowing the Arduino target to auto-reset by itself (when a new sketch is downloaded), which is very helpful and makes the work easier, whenever the reset pin is brought out to 6-pin connector the auto reset will occur.
There are two pins labelled as BLK and GRN, therefore, in order to align the FTDI basic board with you Arduino target use these pins.

In order to verify if the board is working or not, you can easily check that from the serial traffic on the LEDs since it has TX and RX LEDS (better to use than FTDI cable).
One very important fact is that the main reason the board was created is to decrease the cost of Arduino development, yet on the other hand, increase ease of use! A cool feature in this product is that it can be configured to 3.3V or 5V through the jumper.
